Tour Overview: The Struggle for Philadelphia
In the American Revolution, no years were more critical than 1777-1778 and no city more vital to the interests of the patriots, or more coveted by the British, than Philadelphia. Because it was so critical, the struggle for it was intense. This 8 day tour, led by Col. Jim Johnson, one of America's outstanding and articulate scholars of the Revolution, will center around those battles for Philadelphia. In June 1778, General Sir Henry Clinton evacuated Philadelphia for a march that would end at the Battle of Monmouth. Philadelphia thereafter would remain in American hands. In this tour, we will visit the sites of this great and critical campaign that shaped the outcome of the American Revolution in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, reliving it all through Johnson’s vivid eye. |

Tour Name: Nez Perce
Country: USA
Departures:Multiple Departures - Please Enquire |
Tour Overview: The Tragic Flight for Freedom
For thousands of years, north central Idaho and eastern Oregon and Washington have been home to the Nez Perce. Today, the traditions and history of this great people are centered in thirty-eight separate sites scattered across these three stunningly beautiful states, and Montana. These sites evoke the clashes and the friendships between the Nez Perce and the explorers, fur traders, missionaries, soldiers, settlers, gold miners, loggers, and farmers who invaded their homeland. On this spectacular 11 day tour, we will visit many of these sites, among them the place where the Nez Perce graciously received the earliest of these white men, Lewis and Clark, in 1805. Some forty years later, this proud nation found itself part of the United States when the U. S. and Great Britain divided the Oregon Territory along the 49th parallel. By 1855, when many of the Nez Perce had been converted to Christianity, much of their traditional homeland had become a reservation. Historian Guide Ed Bearss will lead this tour, interpreting its compelling and tragic story in its entirety in a thrilling journey across one of America’s most beautiful landscapes. |

Tour Overview: The Legend of the Little Bighorn
On a hot June Sunday in 1876, a column of 225 soldiers of the Seventh U. S. Cavalry, led by yellow-haired George Armstrong Custer, fought a fierce battle with an overwhelming array of Sioux and Cheyenne braves. When the smoke and dust lifted, not a single soldier was left alive. This was “Custer’s Last Stand” of legend and history. In this eight-day tour, we will become acquainted in-depth with the spectacular and tragic Battle of the Little Bighorn and the Indian wars on the northern plains from 1865-1877. This tour is a story of boldness, bravery, and brashness splashed against the backdrop of the high plains of Montana and Wyoming and played out under the shadows of the majestic Bighorn Mountains. We couldn’t be led by a more knowledgeable Historian Guide. Neil Mangum is a former Little Bighorn superintendent who spent thirteen years on that storied battlefield and is steeped in its magic. |

Tour Overview: Kentucky in the Civil War
Abraham Lincoln said, “I think to lose Kentucky is nearly the same as to lose the whole game.” Clearly, Kentucky was critical to the Union cause. Over the first months of the Civil War, the state’s political equilibrium and sovereignty would be shaken to the core. In September of that first year of the war, Confederate General Leonidas Polk entered Kentucky to seize positions for defending the Mississippi River at Columbia. Union General Ulysses S. Grant responded by occupying Paducah and Smithland on the state’s northern border. It was then certain that Kentucky was to become a bloody battleground Radiating out from Lexington throughout the week, this tour, led by noted historian Brian Steel Wills, will visit many of these famous sites and battlegrounds in the heart of this extraordinary state. |

Tour Name: The Sioux Wars
Country: USA
Departures:Multiple Departures - Please Enquire |
Tour Overview: The Minnesota and Dakota Uprisings
The Civil War years 1862 to 1864 were often years of terror in Minnesota and neighboring Dakota Territory—for Indians and settlers alike. It was a familiar scenario—whites moving in on Indian lands and claiming it for their own, and Indians—the angry Santee Sioux—going on the warpath. The Sioux went on a rampage that continued until December 1862 when Federal troops under General Henry L. Sibley defeated them at Wood Lake. Many landless Sioux roamed the adjoining Dakota Territory the following summer, fearing death if they surrendered. These Sioux wars will be waged once more in a vivid retelling by Historian Guide Ed Bearss. The combination of his vision and ravishing scenery, ranging from pristine lakes to the Dakota Badlands, will make this a memorable look at the past from a scenic seat in the present. |

No Northern state, other than Ohio, has produced a greater constellation of Civil War generals and presidents of the United States. Rosecrans, James B. Tour Name: Marching Through Georgia
Country: USA
Departures:Multiple Departures - Please Enquire |
Tour Overview: Sherman Wages Total War
In May 1864, Union Major General William T. Sherman marched into Georgia, aiming for its heart, Atlanta. He was under orders to “get into the interior of the enemy’s country, inflicting all the damage you can.” Waiting for him on Rocky Face Ridge, the “Georgia Gibraltar,” was Joseph E. Johnston, a skillful defensive strategist. A deadly eight-month dance of battles and sieges would carry the relentless Sherman through Atlanta to Savannah where at Yuletide he would offer that port city as a “Christmas gift” to President Lincoln. The acclaimed Civil War historian and tour guide, Ed Bearss, will lead us on Sherman’s bloody trail through Atlanta, all the way to the beaches of the Atlantic. Ed will reconstruct the events at seldom-visited sites, some of them remaining, remarkably, as they existed in 1864. The story of Sherman’s Atlanta campaign will unfold in this week-long tour. A step-by-step portrayal of the final, fatal thrust into the heart of the Confederacy by Sherman, the man who came to personify total war. |

Tour Overview: The California Wine Story
California, often referred to as the “the Wine State”, grows the grapes for more than 80 percent of all wine produced in the United States. Not as well known however, is that the Golden State has been making wine since the 1700s. Indeed, wine and California are as inexorably linked in history as gold and California. The gold rush in the mid-1800s drew a cast of characters seeking their fortunes. But some of these adventurers saw more fortune in vineyards than in panning streams. This tour, led by the California wine historian, Charles L. Sullivan, will introduce some of these wine pioneers, including Charles Kohler the “father of California’s wine industry.” We will also meet Agoston Haraszthy, Charles Krug, Jacob Schram, Pietro Rossi, and other California wine legends. Modern day California giants such as Robert Mondavi, Warren Winiarski of Stag’s Leap and Dan Duckhorn will not be forgotten. The tour will center in Napa and Sonoma counties. We will visit old and new wineries, learn about their histories and traditions, and of course, liberally sample their product! |

Tour Name: Lincoln at Gettysburg
Country: USA
Departures:Multiple Departures - Please Enquire |
Tour Overview: A Proclamation of Freedom
The three-day Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863 stunned the nation. It was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Five months later, in November, President Abraham Lincoln was asked to say a “few appropriate words” of dedication at the new national cemetery on Gettysburg’s bloody field. He delivered one of the great masterpieces of the English language, a speech as profound as it was brief, an immortal proclamation of freedom, a stirring tribute to government “of the people, by the people, for the people.” Its eloquence still echoes throughout the world. This blue chip tour will be led by James McPherson, the Civil War scholar, whose book, Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era, is seen by many as the best single-volume history of the war ever written. Jim will lead us on a tour of the battlefield, into every section of its hallowed ground. We will attend the Dedication Day observances of the historic occasion of Lincoln’s address 141 years ago and hear speeches and the address itself delivered by James Getty, America’s foremost Lincoln presenter. For an in-depth look at Gettysburg, the battle, and the address, this tour is second to none. |

Tour Name: Santa Fe

Departures:Multiple Departures - Please Enquire |
Tour Overview: The historic pageant of westward expansion comes to life on this 9-day interpretive program. Unique among the Vanishing Trails Expeditions, the Santa Fe Trail was not an emigrant trail but a commercial one. Beginning in 1821 when the Spanish colonial city of Santa Fe was finally opened to outside trade, American traders headed west over traditional Indian trails with goods craved by the isolated Mexicans: cloth, dry goods, hardware and jewelry. They returned, sometimes within a matter of months, with gold and silver for the economically-depressed Missouri banks, plus wool, furs and mules. Now modern-day adventurers can experience the excitement of this chapter in American history. View actual wagon ruts, visit historic forts and trading posts, learn about trail life and meet some of the characters who peopled the trail between Kansas City and Santa Fe. Capture the romance and adventure of this exciting American drama as we head the "wagons" westward once again along the Santa Fe Trail!
